A Moment of Science
The 2- minute radio programs from A Moment of Science answer all kinds of questions about science, require no knowledge of science, and welcome listener questions. Produced at Indiana University, Bloomington, in cooperation with IU's scientific community, and scientists around the world, the program is heard across the US and around the world. Underwriting comes from the Office of the Vice President for Research, and the Office of the Chancellor in Bloomington.

Achievers Summer Academy
Provides high school students with firsthand experience of what to expect in college and how to effectively prepare while in high school. Besides attending daily classes in English, mathematics, and critical thinking, campers will participate in college planning workshops and have the opportunity to explore the campus.

ACP (Advance College Project)
ACP at Indiana University is a partnership program between IU and participating high schools in Indiana. Ohio, and Michigan, offering college credit to students who enroll in courses offered in their high schools during the school day. And taught by certified high school teachers who hold adjunct lecturer status with IU. Courses are administered from IU Bloomington, IU East, IU Kokomo, IU Northwest, and IU Southeast. Courses are intended to serve a wide range of students interested in pursuing college credit. In 2003-04, ACP served 94 schools, supported 300 teachers, and 1,900 students. STEM classes include calculus, physics and chemistry.

ACP (Advance College Project) in Physics
ACP at Indiana University offers P221, a calculus-based, introductory physics course in selected high schools. The ACP has well-defined procedures for certification of teachers to teach this course as part of the ACP. A member of the IU Physics faculty approves certification and the course syllabus, conducts site visits, organizes an annual workshop, and writes the final exam. ACP is a partnership between IU and select high schools in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan.

IU East
Beginning Teacher Mentor Program
IU East Division of Education offers services to all beginning teachers (first two years) in our service area.  A full-time faculty member serves as a mentor, providing such services as one-on-one consultation, resources, portfolio support, and content area consultation.  Services are voluntary, upon request, and completely confidential.

Community Education Coalition (Fayette County)
The Community Education Coalition is a non-profit organization founded in Connersville, Indiana with the purpose of making education important for every area resident.  In July 2001, the CEC in partnership with the Fayette County Foundation applied for a Lilly Endowment Inc. Grant for $5,000,000.00 entitled Community Alliances to Promote Education. In December 2001, the full amount of the grant was award to the CEC in partnership with Indiana University Foundation and Indiana University East for the establishment of the of eleven arts and science center programs.  Indiana University East Division of Education currently facilitates the offering of graduate credit workshops for teachers through the CEC.

Connersville Senior High School
The Chair of the Division of Education participates in the Connersville High School “Compact for Student Success”, a broad-based strategic planning effort for school improvement that includes many stakeholders from the community and school corporation.  Guided by a newly written mission statement, strategy teams are now working to develop action plans for “student success”.

Fayette County School Corporation, Algebra Project
IU East Division of Education is a partner with Fayette County School Corporation in the implementation of “The Algebra Project” funded by a Title II Science and Math Partnership Grant.  This innovative professional development effort will provide summer institutes led by IU East Mathematics and Education faculty and follow-up training for forty, fifth through ninth grade teachers of algebra over a period of three years. A Lead Teacher model will be used so that each of the ten buildings involved in the project will have the benefit of an expert to model new strategies, to encourage teacher understanding and implementation of new methods, and to serve as a link between IU East and their respective buildings.

Mentor Teacher Training
Indiana University East is a state-approved site for training of Mentor Teachers for the Indiana Mentoring and Assessment Program.  Training sessions and follow up activities are offered each year.

Science Lab Visits
On an informal basis, various faculty in the School of Natural Sciences allow students from local middle and high schools to visit their laboratory spaces to get an introduction to the processes involved in scientific research.

Science Olympiad
Middle and high school science students from schools in southern Indiana come to the IU Southeast campus to share their thinking talents and physical creations as they compete in the annual Regional Science Olympiad. Faculty from the Schools of Education and Natural Sciences are event coordinators and judges for the event held on campus each year in late winter.

Computer Science Department Outreach
The Computer Science Department has been active in outreach to K-12 educational institutions in the North Central region of Indiana.   Activities:  * Faculty make presentations to local high schools each year  * Occasional presentations to primary or middle school students  * Formal contacts with high school counselors to inform them about the computer science program  * Attendance at career days at local high schools  * Maintain active membership in the Computer Science Teacher’s Association

Magnet Program in Information Technology and Engineering Technology
The computer science program at IU South Bend worked with the South Bend School Corporation to secure a DOE grant to establish a magnet program in Information Technology and Engineering Technology.  After the grant was received, IU South Bend has been working with the high school teachers to develop the computer science curriculum for Riley High School.  During the past year, IU South Bend provided a ten week course in computer programming and problem solving for the students in the magnet program at Riley High School.  Next year, the program will develop a summer workshop for computer science teachers in the school corporation will provide stipend to the high school teachers.
