Scholarship of Engagement

What is “the scholarship of engagement?”

The National Review Board for the Scholarship of Engagement uses the term to identify scholarship in the areas of teaching, research, and/or service that engages faculty in academically relevant work that simultaneously meets the campus mission and goals and community needs. The scholarly agenda contributes to the public good by integrating the campus with external audiences in the activities of scholarship, goal-setting, selecting and applying means and methods, and reflecting on and disseminating results. Though the interaction may involve only one dimension of scholarship or a single activity, it is the intentional, collaborative interaction that characterizes the scholarship of engagement.

Cox, in Creating a New Kind of University; Institutionalizing Community-University Engagement, edited by Stephen L. Percy, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Nancy L.
