The International Academy (IA) Pathways Project

This project involves two components.

A Partnership for Improving College Readiness and Global Competence at the International Academy in Arsenal Tech High School

Samantha S. Bartholomew, School of Education, IUPUI
Robert Helfenbein, School of Education, IUPUI
Annela Teemant, School of Education, IUPUI
Alan Smith, International Academy, Arsenal Tech High School, Indianapolis Public Schools

This project involves a collaboration between Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and the International Academy at Arsenal Tech High School to support a three-pronged approach to advance the International Academy mission and increase access to an internationalized college-preparatory curriculum for all of IA’s students. Thus, the goals of this initiative are to 1) formalize and activate local community and international partnerships that advance IA mission; 2) engage teachers in curriculum development, including development of service learning opportunities, that increase access to college preparatory courses and
experiences; and 3) institutionalize use of a research-based pedagogy known to work with culturally, linguistically, economically, and geographically diverse learners.

World Languages, Strategic Learning, Global Competence

Martha Nyikos, School of Education, IU-B
Adriana Melnyk, World Languages Specialist, Office of Curriculum & Instruction, Indiana Department of Education
Beate Westerhouse, German Teacher Brenna Macias, Spanish Teacher, Enterprise International Academy, Arsenal Tech High School

This project involves a collaboration among the Language Education Department of the Indiana University School of Education, the world language department and Enterprise International Academy within Arsenal Technical High School of the Indianapolis Public Schools, and the Office of Curriculum and Instruction within the Indiana Department of Education. The collaboration will support Enterprise International Academy’s and the World Language Department’s mission to develop globally literate students who are able to function in a variety of global contexts for problem-solving purposes, communicate in languages other than English, and pursue global careers and post-secondary educational opportunities. This institution was selected as a partner because its mission addresses the need to increase high school graduation rates through authentic and contextualized student engagement, as well as the desire to increase post-secondary study opportunities for its students, both of which are overarching goals of the Pathways Initiative. Crispus Attucks High School has joined in this project due to similar needs and goals. The initiative consists of three overlapping strands: (1) language learning strategies for students, (2) formative assessment instruments to more accurately assess student performance and proficiency development, and (3) transcultural engagements in communication contexts.
